Availability of data—the Discovery Phase

A Discovery Phase in early 2006 determined the availability of water resources data from a range of stakeholders, including state and territory agencies, water authorities, Australian Government agencies, and members of the water industry and related associations.

The findings of the Discovery Phase informed AWR 2005 in terms of available data and areas that required investment and work.

Key data gaps identified during the Discovery Phase included:

  • the lack of a national framework for river health assessments, and gaps in data and assessments of river health across much of Australia (with the exception of Victoria , Tasmania , and the Murray-Darling Basin )
  • poor knowledge of the key datasets that make up the water balance in catchments across Australia
  • poor understanding of the connectivity of surface water and groundwater in many parts of Australia .
