What does AWR 2005 report?
AWR 2005 aims to address three headline parameters that each raise a number
of questions about some core water resource information needs of the National
Water Initiative.
- Water availability
- How much water do Australia's systems have?
- When does it become available?
- How much water do we store?
- What is the variability of our water resources between years?
- What are the connections between resources?
- Water use
- How much water is currently committed under entitlements, licences,
policies, and other water sharing agreements?
- How much is allocated in a given year?
- How much water do we use?
- How do we use water? How do we reuse water?
- What water resources are being used?
- River and wetland health
- What is the current condition of our water resources?
- What are the key environmental assets for each system?
- What are the water requirements of our key environmental assets
and ecosystems?
During AWR 2005 it was recognised that it was necessary to integrate the
findings from the three headline parameters to address strategic issues in water
management across Australia. The following high level questions were required to
be considered.
- Integrated
Assessment
- Was our consumptive use sustainable in 2004-05?
- Where does consumptive use exceed entitlement in 2004-05?
- Is there a correlation between the health of rivers and wetlands and
consumptive use in 2004-05?
- Where are our overallocated rivers and catchments in 2004-05?
- What are the implications of surface water and groundwater interactions
on consumptive or environmental use of water in 2004-05?
