Maps - protected wetlands, rivers and river catchments
The following maps illustrate Australia 's wetlands, rivers and catchments
that are specifically covered by legislation designed to protect their high
conservation value.
Strict criteria have been applied to the datasets used to generate the maps,
which has resulted in the omission of certain types of waterbodies, including:
- rivers or wetlands that have relevant protective legislation
in draft format or some protection under planning protocols
- areas that are afforded legislative protection, where the
intent is not to protect river health from a holistic perspective, such as
water supply catchments.
The maps are not intended to be interpreted as maps of river and wetland health,
rather they depict the progress of the various jurisdictions in providing legislative
protection for the health of their water assets. It is recognised that protection
may also be provided by policies other than legislation, but these have not
been assessed here because they are likely to be more contingent on the current
government.
A sample of the national scale map is shown below. The maps are based on the
datasets listed in the Datasets - protected wetlands, rivers and
river catchments section.
