Level of groundwater extractions relative to sustainable yield

Groundwater extractions can be compared with the sustainable yield of groundwater management units (where reported) to provide an insight to the level of development that is occurring across Australia . The accompanying map shows this as a variable response to sustainable management of groundwater extractions across the jurisdictions. Key areas in which groundwater extractions exceed the stated sustainable yield include central and northern New South Wales , the Perth coastal strip, and some parts of Queensland . A number of areas across Australia also show a high level of extraction relative to sustainable yield. This comparison is possible because most of the high yielding or highly developed groundwater management units have sustainable yield data, apart from several areas in Queensland . In many areas across Australia , management actions since 2005 have led to reduced levels of extraction.
