Ground Water Caps

Groundwater caps in Australia are generally an annual volumetric limit that is based on an assessed sustainable yield. Some caps are set at the level of entitlements at a particular date. This applies to groundwater management units that are either:

  • highly developed before the sustainable yield is assessed and are currently being adjusted to bring the cap back to the sustainable yield, or
  • in areas where the resource is not developed and so a conservative approach has been used to cap entitlements (a provisional cap) until the sustainable yield is assessed.
